Jackson YMCA

October 14, 2008 Brought to you by the Jackson YMCA

We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities

October 14, 2008

A letter to our YMCA members,

The Jackson YMCA’s mission is to build strong kids, strong families and a strong Jackson community by advocating programs that promote a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. During the past several months, various stories and editorials printed in the Citizen Patriot have been critical of the YMCA. The YMCA Board of Directors respects the opinions of others, whether positive or negative. Constructive criticism is always taken to heart to improve the services provided by the YMCA. However, we do feel the need to clarify some of the inaccuracies and misunderstandings that have been vocalized.

We would first like to state that all operational and financial decisions regarding the removal of the towel service and second desk were made by the Board of Directors; not Clark Heter, who was carrying out a directive we set out for him. The plan we developed was designated for Clark to execute.

By removing the free towel service and removing the ‘second desk,’ we are saving the YMCA an estimated $100,000 in operating costs, annually, WITHOUT cutting jobs or slashing wages. While we understand the convenience that this service provided, the Board of Directors was left with no other choice but to cease providing towels in the face of poor economic conditions. As the operating costs for the service became too great, we would have been forced to cut back on the financial aid we provide to underprivileged children and families, which is the long-lasting tradition of the YMCA that will never change.

To further clarify the VOP retraction in the Sept. 12th. Cit Pat, the hiring of family members has always been accepted by this YMCA, and many others, as a fair employment practice. However, their status as a family member of a current employee provides no leverage during the hiring process. They are solely judged on the previous experience they have and the skills they possess in relation to the position they are applying for. The Board of Directors issued prior approval for the hiring of the family member in question.

Finally, we must clarify that we are not a United Way organization. We do not now, nor have we received any contributions from them over the last five years, unless the United Way receives a donor-directed contribution specifically requesting the monies are to benefit the Jackson YMCA.

Communication is the key to any successful relationship. We can agree that efforts to communicate between leadership and members could have been made more evident, and changes will be made. Additional measures will be taken to ensure that more lines of communication will be open, including hardcopy newsletters and postings all around the Y, in addition to current e-mail newsletters. Meetings will also be scheduled more frequently, so members can discuss questions, comments and concerns with Board members. These additional avenues will help us better communicate with the members that help us build strong kids, strong families and strong communities—a mission and purpose we’ve been committed to for the last 112 years.

The Jackson YMCA has always been committed to serving its members and its mission, first and foremost. With this said, we trust you understand that, when faced with tough decisions, we carefully evaluate all alternatives before taking the final vote. We hope that you’ll join, donate, volunteer or lend a hand, because together, we are the YMCA.

Respectfully, Jackson YMCA Board of Directors:
