News You Can UseFrom the Board President…
Hello Fellow Members,
I wanted to take a little space in this newsletter to introduce myself to those of you I don’t know yet. My name is Michael Beyerstedt and I was recently elected to be the President of our Board of Directors. I used the word -our- purposefully, as this is our YMCA. Service leadership will characterize my term as the Board’s President; I will emphasize teamwork, trust, and empathy, with the objective of improving the Jackson YMCA while keeping an eye on our mission, improving communications, and of course, personal involvement. This concept, and the motto, “all of us are smarter than any of us;” mean very much to me, and guide how I conduct myself. The reason I bring these things up is that I have been asked by several people how they can help the YMCA through the difficult times we exist in. The first area I point to is contributing to the Partner With Youth
Campaign. This year we have doubled the percentage of members who are contributing, so I thank you and the kids who depend on us thank you. Beyond this, everyone has different gifts that may benefit the Jackson YMCA, and if you think you can help out, leave a note for me at the front desk; I read my mail and will be sure to get back with you. Lastly, there is service on the Board of Directors. We have developed an application for members who are interested in Board service, and they can be obtained from the front desk. If this is the area where you think you may be of value, fill out an application and you will be hearing from us.
Thank you,
Michael Beyerstedt
Member Spotlight – Cliff Soles
If you have been around the YMCA, or back at Chip’s Place in the morning you probably know Cliff Soles and “the crew”. Cliff and his friends work out at the YMCA nearly 6 days a week. They start the workout at Chip’s for coffee; and some “discussion” on the latest YMCA, local and world events. The fun continues as they move up to the wellness center to take over a row of treadmills for their cardio. But Cliff is known around the YMCA for more than his regular fellowship with the guys. At age 69, Cliff holds two state records on the bench press, benching over 390 LBS. He has also competed nationally! When asked the secret to his good health, Cliff has several. First, his wife’s “good home cooking”. Cliff says, “she is a good cook, I have always eaten good”. Cliff also drinks A LOT of milk, enough that he has been harassed
about it, and “quite a bit of tea, out of a big mason jar”. Finally, Cliff attributes his good health to the regular strength training sessions with his group of friends. Cliff says, “You have to have a good group of guys to challenge and motivate you”. “Some days I come in tired, I might be thinking I will just take it easy today, but they push me”. Cliff says new members to his group are always welcome…You can see Cliff in action on Thursday July 23rd at 10:30 a.m. Cliff and the guys will be up in the free weight room where Cliff will do a bench press demonstration as part of our Senior Open House.
